In my garden on my birthday - August 13th!

It's hard to believe that I am 49 years old today. I still feel like a kid most of the time - maybe someday I'll decide to grow up!

I harvested my first Wayahead Tomato. It's too bad only one of these plants survived the hail storm back in May - they look like fine tomatoes.

A bumblebee crawls across one of Andy's sunflowers.

Andy's watermelons continue to grow (and be left alone by the neighbors). He has 5 now and is anxiously awaiting harvesting the biggest one.

The peaches are getting a nice red blush on them. They are easier to see on the tree now and I have a few more than I thought - probably 2 dozen. I can't wait to taste them - peaches in Minnesota, what a rare treat!

The red swanson grapes are starting to ripen. I don't think we will have any more concords. I have to cut them back too severely to be a good neighbor on the other side. I think I may have to just take them out - they are too much work to be constantly cutting back - and if I don't get anything in return for them.....

How do you keep the birds from getting the fruite off yoru trees and vines? We have lots of fruit trees and some grape vines here at our new home. This is all new to me. WE have pears, apples, peaches and grapes. How do we keep the birds from eating them so we can have the fruit for us?

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Margie - I don't do anything to keep the birds away - I let them eat what they want and so far it hasn't been much of a problem. I know they sell nets to put over trees to keep the birds out - but I have never tried them and can't imagine trying to put one over a huge tree!!!!
