Raspberry Season has begun!

Look at what I picked today. Yum, yum, yum!

My raspberries are a tangled mess. I have summer raspberries and fall raspberries all planted together. I have red raspberries and yellow raspberries all planted together. I had black raspberries in there also, but moved them last year.

I like my raspberries all mixed up. I get raspberries from June until frost this way. And I like the flavor variety from growing so many different kinds.

My raspberries spread past their boundaries and I dig up the wandering plants and give them to my neighbors - I think they all look at me strange when I tell them I have no idea what I am giving them - except that it is a raspberry plant. They just have to wait until it bears fruit and be pleasantly surprised.

I'm not planning on making as much raspberry jam this year as I have in past years. I am going to save some of the berries for making syrup for my waffles and for making sorbet. I am going to branch out some. I'll be sure and share my recipes and my successes and failures - I always do.

  1. We picked our first couple raspberries last week! And then we waited and were able to pick a small handful for breakfast yesterday. It is so wonderful to have these fruits growing right in our yard! I know we have "regular" and black raspberries. And I'm pretty sure we've got a variety which will keep us in fruit from now till fall. I look forward to hearing what recipes you try with these berries...

Where did you get your raspberry plants from and what variety? Ours are not bearing fruit yet.

  3. I've had my raspberry plants for years. I think I bought them at a local nursery but I may have ordered them online. I honestly don't remember.

I don't know what varieties they are any more either - they are all mixed up together.

Yours may be fall raspberries. They won't produce for until August. The summer berries are the ones producing right now.

Thanks! Do you have suggestions for summer bearing raspberries?
We live down in Shakopee and I recently stumbled upon your site. Just love reading about your garden. I'm very fond of growing veggies and this year, I've tried to grow as many as possible. I'm blessed to be able to pick something every few days! It is very exciting!!

  5. Latham is a good variety for our area for summer berries.

Gardening is so much fun. It tastes so much better and it is just so great to be able to go out and pick what you want instead of running to the store.
